Biography:
Hot new director, Thabo Marera has more than impressed the team at Velocity Films in the various projects that he has done to date.
Velocity has been developing Thabo's career over a period of two years. Prior to this Thabo was an Assistant Director on Yizo Yizo, so his experience in film goes back for some time.
During these two years at Velocity Thabo secured himself a full scholarship to study at the International Film and Television Workshops, a film school in Portland, Oregon, USA. In an article, David Lyman the founder wrote "After reading Thabo's letter I realised that if anyone can write with as much conviction, he will succeed in anything. I just had to give him a full scholarship which was the first in the history of our school".
Thabo has moved quickly up the ranks since his first spot. Thabo's "Musica" project was all his own idea and he literally put the entire production together himself without a budget. It showed us that not only does he have cinematographic abilities, but the ability to provide a quality production on a shoestring and he is able to recognise and communicate a good idea in a short time frame. Above all, Thabo has the passion. Thabo, in his inimitable style has since gone on to impress many of the creatives he has worked with and is admired by all for his passion and incredible persona in dealing with cast, crew, agency and client. Right now, more than anything, Thabo is intent on proving himself and we can guarantee that he will shoot "lights out" to give a client a brilliant show.
And just to prove all of this, Thabo looks set to be the most awarded Black international commercials director in S.A. today with a recent Clio 2004 finalist for Harley Davidson/Arrive Alive and the same spot been featured in the D&AD Automotive section. As well as a recent award received in Asia for a commercial he directed for one of the biggest agencies in Asia.
With Velocity backing Thabo's 100% of the way, one is assured the best production value.
