Biography:
Barry Markowitz was born in Brooklyn, New York to parents who survived the Holocaust. Educated in Israel at Hebrew University, Barry has a Degree in Jewish History and speaks both Hebrew and Yiddish.
After completing his education Barry became interested in film. He began his career working at Ferco Camera in New York City. He quickly began camera assisting and eventually moved up to Director of Photography. He was soon a sought after Cinematographer for television commercials, shooting for many of the industry's top Directors.
Barry broke into independent features with Director James Toback's 1989 film "The Big Bang". He parlayed his early success into long working relationships with Billy Bob Thornton and Robert Duval. These collaborations have produced the critically acclaimed films; "Slingblade", "The Apostle", and "All the Pretty Horses".
Barry was inducted into the ASC in 2005. He lives in New York City where he enjoys playing Ice Hockey and giving incorrect directions to tourists.
